This strategic stamping is a critical element in the proper functioning of a needle safety device. After the medicine is delivered from the syringe, the needle assembly is activated, thereby sliding the stamped latch along the length of the cannula and over the tip of the cannula. The device is designed to prevent the reuse of the needle but more importantly to effectively cover the tip of the cannula, preventing accidental needle sticks after the needle assembly is removed from the syringe for disposal. The design of the Latch was extremely critical to the proper functioning of the safety device.

Weiss-Aug first built a prototype stamping tool to create the Latch for functional testing and validation. Working closely with our customer’s R&D team, Weiss-Aug needed to sample the part using several different raw material metals to find the metal with the precise mechanical properties that would have the safety device consistently function properly.

After the prototype development phase, Weiss-Aug built multiple production tools to meet the high demand for this stamping. Because of the critical safety requirements of the product, it was important that Weiss-Aug could confirm with certainty that every latch was perfectly stamped. A high speed on line vision inspection camera system was built to record and tabulate data for the four (4) most critical dimensions of the part. The camera system interfaces with a computer to store the measurement data and calculate all SPC analysis of the data. If for any reason even one part out of a million is measured by the camera inspection system to be out of specification, the stamping press will automatically stop making parts.
