METALS

Through experience, Weiss-Aug has developed expertise in metal selection. We understand the different characteristics of each metal and can help you determine which metal best suites your stamping and or insert molding application. Weiss-Aug also inspects all incoming raw materials for characteristics such as tensile strength, camber, elongation, thickness and hardness

Metal Types

Stainless Steel
• Iron-base alloys (50% minimum iron) containing at least 10% chromium
• Corrosion- and heat- resistant
• Specialty alloys with added elements
• Nickel for increased corrosion resistance, ductility and workability
• Molybdenum for increased corrosion-resistance, particularly resistance to pitting,
increased creep strength and high- temperature strength
• Columbium and titanium for stabilization

Example: SS 301
• Austenitic stainless
• Good corrosion resistance
• Elevated carbon to allow for cold working to a variety of tempers
• 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, 3/4 hard, full hard, extra full hard and high yield tempers
• Easily formed in the annealed condition
• Deforming the material in the tempered condition as cracking and tearing can result
• Intermediate annealing only serves to reduce the hardness and therefore ultimate properties

Phosphorus bronze
• Alloy of copper with 3.5 to 10% of tin and a significant phosphorus content of up to 1%
(the phosphorus is added as deoxidizing agent during melting)
• Toughness, strength, low coefficient of friction, and fine grain
• Phosphorus also improves the fluidity of the molten metal

Example: Phosphorus Bronze 521 (CA521)
• Good capacity for cold worked
• Excellent suitability for soldering, brazing
• Relatively fair rating for resistance welding

Beryllium Copper
• Metal alloy of copper and 0.5 to 3% beryllium
• Significant metalworking and operating performance qualities
• Ductile, weldable, and machinable alloy
• Can be heat-treated to improve its strength, durability, and electrical conductivity
• Used in manufacturing of low-current contacts and electrical connectors

Example: Beryllium Copper 174
• High conductivity
• Superior strength
• Good surface and shape throughout coil
• Consistent physical properties
• Conductivity up to 60%
• Yield strength up to 125 KSI

Brass
• Alloy of copper and zinc
• Proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses with
varying properties

Molybdenum
• Great conductors of heat
• Can withstand extremely hot temperature applications
• Used for lighting applicationsNylon (Poylamide)
Characteristics
• High strength and rigidity
• Very good impact strength
• Good elastic properties
• High resistance to chemicals
• Dimensional stability
• Low tendency to creep
• Exceptional sliding friction properties
• Simple processing
• Excellent electrical insulation properties
Applications
• Electrical connectors
• Automotive
